On December 1, news that Ma Huateng rode the Chongqing Yangtze River Cableway flooded WeChat Moments...

In addition to launching cooperation between Tencent and Chongqing in the field of smart transportation, Ma Huateng’s visit also advanced the implementation of Tencent Miying.

VCBeat has learned that Tencent’s first product to apply artificial intelligence technology in the medical field, “Tencent Miying,” has been fully implemented in Chongqing. Five major Grade A tertiary hospitals in the Chongqing area, including the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing Fuling Central Hospital, Chongqing Fourth People's Hospital, Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, and Chongqing Ninth People's Hospital, will gradually utilize the AI technology of “Tencent Miying” to assist physicians in screening for early-stage esophageal cancer, pulmonary nodules, diabetic retinopathy, and other conditions.

On that day, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government signed a strategic framework agreement in Chongqing, under which both parties will deepen cooperation in smart cities, e-government, and smart healthcare. At the same event, Tencent also reached a collaboration agreement with the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University on medical artificial intelligence. Distinguished attendees at the signing ceremony included Chen Min’er, Secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China; Zhang Guoqing, Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Chongqing; Wu Cunrong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and Executive Vice Mayor; Ma Huateng, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Tencent; Ding Ke, Vice President of Tencent; and Chen Guangyu, Vice President of Tencent’s Mobile Internet Group.

“Tencent Miying” is spearheaded by Tencent’s Internet Plus Cooperation Business Unit, integrating capabilities from multiple top-tier artificial intelligence teams within Tencent, including the AI Lab, Youtu Laboratory, and Architecture Platform Department. It was developed through the cross-disciplinary integration of leading technologies—such as image recognition, big data processing, and deep learning—with medical science.

Pursuant to the Medical Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Agreement signed between Tencent and the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, both parties will jointly promote the integration of artificial intelligence technologies with hospital capabilities. As one of the first batch of Grade A tertiary hospitals in China, the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a key large-scale comprehensive teaching hospital in Chongqing Municipality and has spearheaded the establishment of the city’s first hospital group (medical consortium).

Leveraging the high-quality medical service resources and professional influence of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, as well as Tencent’s leading advantages in artificial intelligence (AI), big data mining and application, and Tencent Cloud, both parties will collaborate on the development and implementation of AI solutions for assisted diagnosis and treatment. Specifically, “Tencent Miying” will deploy its AI-assisted screening capabilities for early-stage esophageal cancer, pulmonary nodules, and diabetic retinopathy at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. Meanwhile, both parties will also explore joint scientific research to utilize AI technology for the assisted screening of new disease types.

In addition, key Grade A tertiary hospitals, including Fuling Central Hospital of Chongqing, Chongqing Fourth People’s Hospital, Chongqing Three Gorges Central Hospital, and Chongqing Ninth People’s Hospital, have each partnered with “Tencent Miying” and have sequentially rolled out AI-assisted screening for various diseases in phases.VCBeat has learned that on December 1, “Tencent Miying” was the first to launch its AI-assisted early screening for esophageal cancer at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and Fuling Central Hospital in Chongqing.

Previously, the Ministry of Science and Technology convened a launch meeting for the Development Plan for New-Generation Artificial Intelligence and major science and technology projects, announced the first batch of national AI open innovation platforms, and designated Tencent to lead the development of the National AI Open Innovation Platform for Medical Imaging.

Since its launch, “Tencent Miying” has expanded its applications from single-disease to multi-disease scenarios. It has established joint laboratories with more than ten Grade A tertiary hospitals across multiple provinces and municipalities in China, and reached cooperation intentions with nearly 100 hospitals nationwide, achieving the diffusion of its applications from regional to national scale. “Tencent Miying” has also extended its scope from early-stage auxiliary screening for esophageal cancer to include screening for pulmonary nodules, diabetic retinopathy, cervical cancer, breast cancer, and other diseases.

By integrating artificial intelligence with medicine, “Tencent Miying” is progressively empowering healthcare institutions to assist physicians in the early screening, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. Meanwhile, it is breaking the pattern of uneven distribution of medical resources by driving the adoption of AI in primary care settings and underdeveloped regions, thereby enhancing the efficiency of screening and diagnosis at the grassroots level and ensuring that patients in remote areas also have access to high-quality medical resources.
