Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMPs), commonly referred to as “meals” for patients, are classified as food rather than pharmaceuticals.

"Professional description refers to foods for special medical purposes, which are neither health supplements nor drugs, but rather specially processed and formulated foods designed to meet the specific nutritional and dietary needs of individuals with limited food intake, digestive or absorptive impairments, metabolic disorders, or specific disease conditions."

The issuance of the Outline of the “Healthy China 2030” Plan in 2016 marked the state’s emphasis on and support for the development of the health industry. The development of Foods for Special Medical Purposes (hereinafter referred to as FSMP) has also received significant attention from the government. The newly promulgated Food Safety Law clarified the legal status of FSMP, while the Nutrition and Food Safety Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society actively participated in the formulation of multiple national standards, playing a leading role in promoting the standardized development of China’s FSMP sector.

In recent years, the emergence of new medical models, such as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) diagnosis and treatment, has significantly improved patients’ healthcare experiences. Clinical nutrition management is an indispensable component of these models, leading to a growing demand for Foods for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP). While the market prospects are vast, the industry faces both opportunities and challenges.

“High-Level Forum on Industry-Academia-Research-Application Collaboration for Foods for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP),” hosted by the Nutrition and Food Safety Branch of the Chinese Geriatrics Society, co-organized by the Sichuan Food Safety Society and West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and guided by the Sichuan Provincial Food and Drug Administration, was convened to promote the healthy and rapid development of the FSMP industry and to develop FSMP products better tailored to the nutritional needs of patients with various diseases.

This event is scheduled to be held at the Jinjiang Hotel in Chengdu from March 8 to March 9, 2018. Meanwhile, the 6th Tianfu International Summit on Clinical Nutrition, along with the inaugural meetings for the West China Clinical Nutrition Specialty Alliance and the Western Medical Nutrition Alliance, are scheduled to take place from March 9 to March 11. Dedicated sub-forums will focus on new technologies and diagnostic/therapeutic practices in clinical nutrition, as well as developments in functional nutritional foods.

A large number of experts attended the conference, including members of the National Committee for Formulating Standards on Foods for Special Medical Purpose (FSMP) and renowned domestic clinical nutrition specialists. They delivered thematic reports interpreting national standards related to FSMP product formulation design; clinical trial management and technical specifications for FSMP; analysis of clinical needs and applications of FSMP; the current status and countermeasures for China’s FSMP industry development; and an analysis and forecast of domestic and international trends in FSMP development. This high-level forum will help promote the close integration of China’s FSMP industry with clinical needs, holding significant importance for fostering industry growth and improving the health status of the middle-aged and elderly population.
