Sean Zhou

Co-CEO of Shanghai United Imaging Intelligence Medical Technology Co., Ltd.

Zhou Xiang has been deeply engaged in the fields of medical IT, digitalization, and intelligence for over a decade. He has led his team to deliver multiple industry-leading innovative products and services to physicians and patients worldwide, and has cultivated a cohort of leading talents in medical AI who are now dispersed across global sectors including the internet, computer hardware and software, insurance, and medical devices.

After earning dual degrees from the Department of Automation and the School of Economics and Management at Tsinghua University, Xiang Zhou pursued his Ph.D. in computer vision and machine learning at the University of Illinois, USA, under the supervision of Professor Thomas S. Huang, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and widely regarded as the “Father of Computer Vision.” His research contributions in computer vision, multimedia, and AI for medical imaging have been cited over 10,000 times, with an H-index of 44. To date, he has filed hundreds of patent applications and holds more than 60 granted international patents.

Explaining his decision to join United Imaging, he said, “It was largely a matter of timing and opportunity. Around the time I resigned earlier this year, I had numerous options, including large multinational corporations, leading domestic internet companies, and several startups. In fact, I nearly missed the chance to join United Imaging Intelligence. A key factor in ultimately coming together was Professor Shen. He commands a vast network of students and wields unparalleled international influence. We have been friends for many years—one in academia, the other in industry—observing each other from across the divide for a long time. Now, embarking on this entrepreneurial journey together, we make an ideal complementary team. Another important reason lies in the unique nature of medical AI. The healthcare industry is incredibly complex, with tens of thousands of diseases and countless diagnostic and therapeutic approaches employed by physicians. Typically, peripheral or independent startups can only delve deeply into a very limited number of areas, making it difficult to achieve economies of scale. However, leveraging United Imaging’s robust platform, United Imaging Intelligence can develop AI solutions that are deeper, broader, more solid, and more sustainable.”

Dinggang Shen (right), one of the first scientists in the world to conduct research on artificial intelligence in medical imaging, and the first to apply deep learning to medical imaging.

Two globally renowned industry leaders have joined forces. One brings over a decade of extensive experience in the industrial sector, boasting the richest expertise in AI commercialization within the industry. The other has been immersed in academia for more than twenty years, possessing deep insights into the most creative knowledge and cutting-edge technologies. Now, combining their strengths, they will lead their team to focus on “empowerment” and “mutual benefit”: empowering physicians and medical devices, while achieving win-win outcomes with doctors, hospitals, research institutions, and third-party companies. “Everyone in our company should strive to be friends with physicians, making AI the best partner for doctors,” said Zhou Xiang.

Currently, the United Imaging Intelligence team has recruited a large number of top talents in the field of medical AI from overseas, forming a “dream team” that perfectly integrates academia and industry.
