Work | "The Doctor"

Author | Luke Fildes

Illustrated History of Medicine | Issue 20180408

Painted in 1891 by the British artist Luke Fildes, this work is rooted in the painter’s personal experience. At that time, his son was seriously ill, and he invited the renowned physician Sir James Murray to provide treatment. Dr. Murray carefully inquired about the young patient’s condition and sat by the bedside contemplating the treatment plan. The painter himself stood quietly behind his son, observing the consultation. This painting meticulously depicts the details of a medical consultation from over a century ago, highlighting the harmonious relationship between doctor and patient.

This week, MiaoShou Doctor announced the completion of nearly RMB 500 million in Series C financing, led by Tencent; Airdoc completed hundreds of millions of RMB in Series B financing, led by Fosun Pharma with follow-on investment from Sogou; Lianyi Medical consecutively closed its Series A+ and Series B rounds, raising over RMB 110 million; Newpulse Medical completed tens of millions of RMB in Series A financing; and Bohou Medical secured tens of millions of RMB in Series A financing from Zhongyu Capital and FenXiang Investment. In the cell therapy sector, emerging company Allogene Therapeutics raised $300 million in Series A financing and established collaborations with Pfizer, Cellectis, and Servier to develop allogeneic “off-the-shelf” CAR-T therapies. Tuesday:2018 Report on the Realization of Commercial Value in Genetic Technology: A Decade Matures NIPT, While Tumor Detection and Microbiology Hold Vast Growth Potential

Genetic research is an exploration of the origins of life, offering an alternative perspective on life and health compared to modern medicine. A company’s mission is to generate substantial returns for its employees and enhance wealth for its owners, while simultaneously creating social value. Genetic companies are no exception; we cannot avoid addressing the issue of commercialization in genetics.

This report traces the evolutionary trajectory of gene technologies, reviews the commercialization process of the gene industry, proposes a relatively comprehensive evaluation framework, and explores the commercial value of gene technologies.

At the 5th NGS Innovation Developers Conference, VCBeat’s Eggshell Research Institute delivered a presentation titled “Exploring the Commercial Value of NGS.” This article is an excerpt from that report.

Wednesday:BAT’s Overseas Healthcare Investment Landscape: Tencent Invests in 14 Early-Stage Projects, Baidu Has Invested in Three This Year, and Alibaba’s Moves Are Modest

As globalization accelerates, the BAT companies (Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent) have begun to expand into international markets, with overseas investment serving as a key strategic priority. In terms of investment logic, Baidu and Alibaba adhere to their core strategic lines: the former favors artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, while the latter focuses on consumer sectors such as clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Tencent, however, has fully adopted an “investment bank” model, collaborating with top-tier global investment firms such as Sequoia Capital, Y Combinator, and NEA to pursue a diversified investment portfolio, with healthcare startups representing a significant focus area.

VCBeat has mapped out BAT’s overseas healthcare investment landscape, focusing on their investment rationale and subsequent moves.

Thursday:A String of Approvals: Is Spring Imminent for AI-Driven Diagnostic Decision Support in Healthcare?

2018 is set to be a memorable year for AI and the healthcare industry. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) successively approved several AI-based diagnostic decision support products. First, on February 14, Viz.AI’s ContaCT application received FDA approval, becoming the first FDA-approved AI diagnostic decision support product for stroke.

Just one week later, the FDA approved another first: Cognoa’s deep learning application became the first AI-based diagnostic decision support system for pediatric autism to receive approval. What does it mean that AI diagnostic decision support systems have been approved in such rapid succession? Currently, which AI diagnostic decision support systems are available, and what diseases do they target? This article attempts to answer these questions.

Friday:Raising Over $100 Million in Just a Few Years: These Companies Share 5 Common Traits | Company List Included

During the growth trajectory of startups, two extreme phenomena emerge: some companies toil for years only to secure meager seed funding, while others manage to raise multiple rounds of substantial financing and achieve rapid growth within a few years. According to Crunchbase data, many companies founded in 2015 or later have already secured over $100 million in funding.

We have selected a list of 39 companies that have experienced rapid growth this year (hereinafter referred to as the “Fast-Growing Companies List”), and through an analysis of these rapidly growing companies, we have identified commonalities among them.

Saturday:Direct Sales? Agency Model? So This Is How Consumer Genetics Companies Sell Their Products

As of 2017, the number of individuals in China who underwent consumer genetic testing reached 300,000. Based on U.S. experience, this figure is projected to surge to 50 million by 2020, representing a vast market.

We can tentatively categorize consumer-oriented genetic testing products into two types: medical-grade and consumer-grade. As the names suggest, medical-grade products must be distributed through hospitals, whereas consumer-grade products have a broader range of distribution channels, including hospitals, health examination centers, educational institutions, fitness centers, beauty clinics, and health management centers.

So, how are these products sold? What considerations do companies take into account for different products when selecting a sales model?
