Health ZhiGu Announces Shenzhen Landing to Focus on Precision Medicine, Healthcare Big Data, and AI Enterprises

Apr 26, 2018 08:36 CST Updated 08:36

From the Wuhan East Lake New Technology Pioneer Center in 1987 to the proliferation of industrial parks and mass innovation spaces, business incubators have continuously enriched their connotations. Their service offerings have evolved from initially providing only physical space to a comprehensive “space + resources + services” model. With over 30 years of development, the evolution of China’s business incubators mirrors the history of entrepreneurship in the country.

In the face of a complex and ever-changing entrepreneurial landscape, how can an “idea” be transformed into a product or service? How can entrepreneurs attract investors, secure marketing resources, and turn promising business concepts into reality? What kind of “incubation” do innovative enterprises need to help them grow from tiny seeds into towering trees?

Among numerous vivid incubator cases, Health Valley, backed by core industrial resources such as Tianyi Group, Meinian Onehealth, and Zhongwei Fund, is highly representative. Since 2014, Health Valley has established its presence in multiple cities across China. By introducing and serving over a thousand medical innovation enterprises, it has become the leading full-industry-chain incubation platform for healthcare and medicine in China.

With the latest Shenzhen industrial park of Health Intelligence Valley now established, VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) interviewed Wang Xiaojun, Vice President of Tianyi Group, CEO of Health Intelligence Valley, and Dean of the Zhongguancun Meinian Health Industry Research Institute. He shared his insights on startup incubation and outlined the initiatives that Health Intelligence Valley has undertaken in recent years to incubate early-stage healthcare ventures.

Resource Integration, Comprehensive Services for Healthcare Innovation Enterprises

Health Intelligence Valley was established in June 2014 and represents Tianyi Group’s strategic initiative in the field of healthcare startup incubation. To understand the strategic logic and resource integration advantages of Health Intelligence Valley, it should be viewed within the broader context of Tianyi Group’s overall layout in the healthcare industry. Founded in 1998, Tianyi Group is a leading Chinese industrial and investment group centered on healthcare. It owns China’s largest professional health checkup and medical services cluster, including two listed companies: Meinian Onehealth and Wandong Medical.

After years of development, Tianyi Group has established a closed-loop healthcare ecosystem encompassing “health checkups–services–data,” creating a mature acceleration system for healthcare enterprises. It has now become the most powerful demand gateway and the most open supply platform in China’s health industry. Additionally, Zhongwei Fund, under Tianyi, is the most operationally mature healthcare industry fund in China. Since 2004, it has successfully invested in more than 20 companies that have gone public via IPOs, with the total market capitalization of its portfolio companies within the ecosystem exceeding RMB 100 billion.

On one hand, it leverages the resource aggregation advantages of Tianyi Group, Meinian Onehealth, and Zhongwei Fund; on the other, it taps into the innovative vitality of the medical industry driven by favorable policies for “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” and the development of the broader health sector. “The Health Intelligence Valley project should be understood within the broader policy context, such as ‘Healthy China 2030’ and initiatives encouraging private capital to enter healthcare services. Aligning with these policies, we aim to build an industrially incubating platform characterized by model innovation, serving entrepreneurs and fostering a conducive environment for medical innovation and startups,” said Wang Xiaojun.

The model innovation mentioned by Wang Xiaojun refers to the unique “concierge-style” service model of Health Intelligence Valley, which includes physical office spaces, supporting facilities, entrepreneurship training, investment resource matchmaking, and international resource connectivity.

Under this service model, Health Intelligence Valley has quickly distinguished itself among numerous industry incubators, becoming the leading industrial incubation platform for China’s healthcare sector. To date, it has established nine Health Intelligence Valley locations in the core areas of major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Ningbo, with a total floor area exceeding 300,000 square meters. It maintains an office in Silicon Valley, USA, has entered into strategic partnerships with innovative platforms such as Israel’s Rainbow and the US-based Rock Health, and is poised to expand into Xiamen, Fuzhou, Tianjin, Suzhou, and other cities.

The logic of Health Intelligence Valley operating as an industrial incubator through resource integration has comparable international benchmarks, such as WeWork and Rock Health. As a leading representative of co-working spaces, WeWork has expanded to 21 countries, covering more than 72 cities and 242 locations, with over 210,000 members. Rock Health, a typical healthcare incubator, provides medical startup teams with resources including office space, mentorship, and seed funding, while collaborating with healthcare institutions to facilitate the commercialization of startups’ products and services.

Health Intelligence Valley is akin to a hybrid of WeWork and Rock Health, providing enterprises with physical office space for lease while also investing in promising projects within its ecosystem and offering services to integrate and connect industrial resources. Currently, WeWork’s valuation has exceeded $20 billion, and Rock Health stands as the most sought-after industry incubator in the healthcare sector. From this perspective, Health Intelligence Valley holds substantial potential for future growth.

“Health Intelligence Valley uses physical space as a carrier to provide valuable full-industry-chain services for innovative enterprises, creating an industrial-agglomeration-oriented co-working space, with the aim of becoming the WeWork of China’s healthcare industry,” said Wang Xiaojun.

“Medical Services + Technological Innovation” Dual-Track Strategy: Cultivating Unicorns

For the enterprises it serves, Health Intelligence Valley focuses on two main pillars: “medical services + technological innovation.” Technology-driven enterprises include those in fields such as genetic testing and artificial intelligence; medical service-driven enterprises encompass high-end health checkup centers, healthcare media outlets, dental care providers, and medical aesthetics companies.

From the list of incubated enterprises at Health Intelligence Valley, we see numerous star companies in the healthcare and medical sector, including Anhan Medical, Meiyin Genetics, and Baihui Weikang.

Anhan Medical

Anhan Medical, founded in 2009, is the world’s first company to successfully develop and commercialize a magnetically controlled capsule gastroscopy system through independent R&D, and it has consistently attracted strong interest from the capital market in recent years. Zhongwei Fund initiated cooperation negotiations in 2015 and invested in Anhan Medical in early 2016; subsequently, the company joined Health Intelligence Valley, which provided it with ongoing incubation support. Meinian Onehealth Healthcare Centers became a key channel for the widespread deployment of its products.

Anhan Medical received tens of millions of dollars in investment from SoftBank in February 2017. On August 15 of the same year, it entered into a strategic partnership with Dazhong Investment, Tongsheng Venture Capital, SoftBank China, Advantage Capital, Qiansheng Investment, and Houxin Health Investment. These six investment firms jointly invested $100 million to support Anhan Medical’s market expansion and subsequent R&D efforts. In March 2018, Anhan Medical was included in the “Unicorn” list jointly released by Great Wall Strategic Consulting and the Torch Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, with an estimated valuation of approximately $1 billion.

According to Xinhua News Agency, on the afternoon of April 11, 2018, after concluding his activities at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018, Xi Jinping visited the Planning Exhibition Hall of the Boao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone. Standing before a row of advanced medical devices, General Secretary Xi listened to introductions by academicians while examining each item individually. He picked up a domestically produced magnetically controlled capsule gastroscope robot, no larger than a finger, and inquired in detail about its research, development, and application. This capsule gastroscope robot is a product of Anhan Medical.
