2017 was a year of rapid growth for companies in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry. As with other technology-driven sectors, the key to AI development lies in talent, and the competition for talent has become a critical component of strategic planning for AI companies. Throughout 2017, China’s AI startups, accounting for 9% of the global total, secured nearly 48% of global financing, surpassing the United States to rank first worldwide. This favorable development trend has attracted many top-tier global AI professionals to favor leading Chinese AI companies. Bosh Medical stands out as a typical representative, having taken the lead in the industry by initiating a strategy to recruit top international talent.
Since its official establishment in August 2017, Baishi Medical has rapidly assembled a team of top-tier talent. Team members hail from prestigious institutions both in China and abroad, including Johns Hopkins University, Carnegie Mellon University, Imperial College London, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, the University of Southern California, Cleveland Clinic, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhejiang University, and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. This has formed an optimal interdisciplinary team at the intersection of computer science and medicine.
In October 2017, Dr. Chenyang Xu, an IEEE Fellow, joined BAI Vision Medical as a Managing Partner; in March 2018, Dr. Haibin Huang, former Director of the Clinical Applications and Training Solutions Department for the Asia-Pacific region at Elekta, was appointed Vice President and Director of Clinical Solutions at BAI Vision Medical.
In April 2018, at the career fair held during the 7th Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) China-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit, numerous students from both on and off campus expressed strong interest in joining Bosh Medical. CMU ranked first globally in artificial intelligence among universities in 2018 and has produced 10 Turing Award laureates and 15 Nobel Prize winners. The CMU China-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit, launched in 2012, is one of the largest and most prestigious university-led innovation and entrepreneurship summits in the United States, attracting over 1,000 attendees annually. Past summits have invited elite leaders from academia, industry, finance, and relevant government agencies in both China and the United States to discuss current hot topics. Notable speakers include Kai-Fu Lee, former President of Google Greater China and founder of Sinovation Ventures; Xiaoping Xu, co-founder of New Oriental and founder of ZhenFund; Feng Li, Partner at IDG Capital; Andrew Moore, Vice President of Google; and Jerome Pesenti, Vice President of Watson Core Technologies at IBM.
The CMU China-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit has attracted elites from various fields. In addition to Dr. Chenyang Xu, previous attendees have included Shoucheng Zhang, Tenured Professor in the Departments of Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Physics at Stanford University; Andrew Moore, Dean of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and former Vice President of Google; Andrew Ng, former Director of Baidu’s Artificial Intelligence Group; Xiaowei Shen, Chief Technology Officer of IBM Greater China; and Bo Xing, Founder of Petuum and faculty member in the Machine Learning Department of CMU’s School of Computer Science.
Artificial intelligence and innovation and entrepreneurship were the central themes of this China-US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Summit. Professor Bo Xing from Carnegie Mellon University delivered a keynote address titled “A Builder’s Take on AI.” Dr. Chenyang Xu, former Chief Technology Officer and General Manager of Siemens’ Silicon Valley Innovation Center, brings extensive experience in commercializing high-tech projects. Currently, he is the co-founder of Bosh Medical, a leading Chinese medical AI company. During the expert panel at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum, Dr. Xu shared his entrepreneurial insights with attendees, analyzed key innovation trends and current business opportunities, and addressed many concerns raised by entrepreneurs, including startup financing and collaboration with large enterprises.
Baishi Medical boasts a highly skilled team combining medical expertise with AI capabilities, as well as a seasoned team for industrialization and operations. The founder, Dr. Lu Yao, is a professor at Sun Yat-sen University and a researcher at the University of Michigan Medical School, with over 15 years of research experience in medical imaging and computer-aided diagnosis (CAD). With the rapid expansion of deployments in top-tier hospitals, Bosh Medical has recently launched large-scale, multi-round recruitment drives both domestically and internationally. Since April, the company has been conducting campus recruitment at several Chinese universities, including Southern Medical University.
