On May 5, the “Inaugural Conference of the Beijing Hospital Ophthalmology Medical Consortium” was held at the Beijing Hospital Conference Center, where “Remote Outpatient Services” were officially launched nationwide for the first time.

The conference was co-hosted by Beijing Hospital and the Ophthalmology Professional Committee of the Chinese Society for Health Information and Big Data in Healthcare. Attendees included Jin Xiaotao, former Deputy Director of the National Health and Family Planning Commission and President of the Chinese Society for Health Information and Big Data in Healthcare; Hu Ruirong, Deputy Director of the Resources Division under the Bureau of Medical Administration and Hospital Management of the National Health Commission; Du Yuantai, Vice President of Beijing Hospital; Dai Hong, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Beijing Hospital, along with numerous other experts and professors in ophthalmology; Xie Xunan, Secretary-General of the Medical Consortium Branch of the China Health Industry Enterprise Management Association; Wang Tiejun, founder of Jinyu Medical’s “Remote Outpatient Clinic”; and representatives from 118 hospitals across China.
At the meeting, Dr. Wang Zhen, Associate Chief Physician, provided a detailed introduction to the “Remote Outpatient Clinic of the Beijing Hospital Ophthalmology Medical Consortium.” Speaking from the perspective of a specialist conducting remote consultations, he shared his insights, emphasizing that the role entails “not only the compassion of a healer but also the responsibility of an educator.” Mr. Wang Tiejun offered an in-depth interpretation of “How Expert Remote Outpatient Clinics Facilitate the Development of Medical Consortia,” examining the topic from multiple dimensions, including policy, market dynamics, and practical applications. Deputy Director Zhang Wei, Director Qin Jiyue, and Dr. Chen Hong from Macheng People’s Hospital; Director Yin Zhanpeng from Cheng’an County People’s Hospital; Director Yang Shiyao from Wuyuan County People’s Hospital; and Director Wu Chunyuan from Jungar Banner Central Hospital delivered insightful presentations based on their practical experience. They discussed the implementation of remote outpatient services within medical consortiums from various perspectives, including initial diagnosis at primary care institutions, remote emergency care, mentorship and training support, and tiered diagnosis and treatment.
The conference also featured a rich lineup of thematic lectures, including Professor Li Yong’s “Latest Advances in the Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy” and Director Wang Zheng’s “Guidelines for Pharmacological Management of Glaucoma.” Concurrent with the conference, remote outpatient consultations were conducted from Ophthalmology Clinic Room 7 at Beijing Hospital, serving a total of 41 patients from primary care settings. The entire process was live-streamed to the conference venue, not only addressing healthcare access issues for patients in grassroots communities but also providing real-time mentoring and guidance to physicians at off-site base hospitals.
It is reported that the Ophthalmology Medical Consortium project of Beijing Hospital plans to establish a nationwide network with 200 partner hospitals across China. This initiative aims to implement a new model featuring daily remote consultations by ophthalmology experts from Beijing Hospital, timely surgical mentoring, and real-time appointment scheduling, triage, and consultation for patients at primary care institutions. Residents in grassroots communities will be able to communicate directly with specialists based at Beijing Hospital without leaving their counties, thereby further alleviating the difficulties and high costs associated with accessing medical care.
