Family doctors and tiered diagnosis and treatment are important directions for the future development of healthcare, as reflected in the policy guidelines issued in April this year in the "Opinions on Promoting the Development of 'Internet + Medical Health'". However, how to truly achieve comprehensive health management within the current medical resources dominated by specialist doctors, extend services in tiered diagnosis and treatment, and realize chronic disease management and disease prevention remains a challenge.
As Weiyuan Medical’s first medical institution to enter the domestic market, Weiyuan Clinic has pioneered innovations in both its healthcare delivery and business models, providing health management and chronic disease management services to mid-to-high-end clients. This private institution has achieved cash flow breakeven amid fierce market competition.
For medical institutions, reputation is more important than profitability, as it serves as the foundation for financial success. This commitment reflects the professional ethos and sense of responsibility upheld by many physicians when launching their practices, and it was the original aspiration of Huang Guoyue in establishing Weiyuan Clinic.
Huang Guoyue, who previously worked in the financial industry, discovered during a health check-up at an overseas clinic that she was in a state of suboptimal health. The physician provided her with extensive advice on health management, a service area that remains largely untapped in China, where hospitals primarily focus on disease treatment.
At that time, she was contemplating whether this model could also be introduced in China. Meanwhile, she observed the mature clinic-plus-family-practitioner business models prevalent in Europe and the United States. Using these as benchmarks, she began establishing a clinic in Beijing, naming it “Weiyuan.” It took Huang Guoyue three years from the initial conception to the completion of the clinic and its official launch in the Taiyanggong area.
Generally, it takes three years for a clinic to achieve sustainable growth, which is why investment funds favor specialized clinics such as dental practices. However, this model does not truly address individuals’ health issues. What Huang Guoyue aims to build is a clinic that implements holistic medicine. Holistic medicine, in this context, refers to offline clinical services focused primarily on health management and chronic disease management. By integrating Eastern medicine and naturopathy with internationally advanced preventive medicine, functional medicine, and rehabilitation medicine, Huang proposes the “Weiyuan Holistic Medical Service System.” This system coordinates currently available medical resources to create a more socially valuable form of “upstream health medicine.”
Huang Guoyue believes that no matter how compelling the vision, it cannot sustain the development of a clinic without genuine technical expertise. To this end, she has spared no expense in recruiting renowned professors and clinical experts from prestigious medical institutions in the United States, Europe, Asia, and other regions, assembling a professional team specializing in preventive care, health regulation, and rehabilitation-oriented general practice tailored to the physiological characteristics of the Chinese population. Complementing this team with advanced European diagnostic technologies, she aims to achieve the integration and alignment of “the highest domestic standards” with “the best international practices.”
Weiyuan Medical’s investment in scientific research and academic disciplines is not only intended to support the clinic’s growth and enhance its influence, but also aims to position Weiyuan Clinic as a bridge connecting domestic and international research institutions, fully leveraging world-leading medical technologies, integrating resources across various healthcare organizations, and assuming greater social responsibility as a healthcare provider.
When establishing a general practice health management clinic, securing physician resources posed the greatest challenge. Lacking suitable general practitioners, Weiyuan Medical opted to invest heavily in incubating and training physicians. Over a three-year period, they built a comprehensive training system that facilitated sending Chinese doctors abroad for training while introducing foreign physicians to China, thereby integrating content and resources. To ensure the delivery of high-quality medical services, Weiyuan established an assessment framework following its exploration of the training system. All highly qualified domestic physicians are required to pass these assessments before assuming their roles. In the future, Weiyuan Medical also plans to offer its complete training curriculum as an exportable package.
Weiyuan prioritizes scientific research and academic discipline development, providing physicians at its clinics with substantial opportunities for career advancement and professional learning. Weiyuan Medical maintains an integrative medicine team in Europe, capable of delivering comprehensive patient care encompassing follow-up, management, and treatment. Physicians at Weiyuan Clinics are also eligible to participate in their research projects, gaining exposure to cutting-edge medical concepts in biosciences, immunology, and medical imaging.
In China, similar to public hospitals within the state system, Weiyuan collaborates with universities such as Tsinghua University, aiming to attract more highly qualified physicians with a strong commitment to healthcare through research initiatives. Meanwhile, Weiyuan maintains an open mindset by engaging in exchanges and cooperation with specialized hospitals across the country, implementing joint diagnosis and treatment programs, and fostering collaborative research projects or thematic studies. It also promotes multi-site practice for physicians, thereby enhancing and enriching the overall healthcare delivery system.
Through scientific research and the development of its first-phase clinics, Weiyuan aims to redefine the concept of health management and reshape the healthcare industry, extending its clinic network to establish multidisciplinary health assessments.
Under the concept of comprehensive health management, Weiyuan has currently established three product lines. The first is health management for VIP members, offering family doctor services and tracking family health. The second is chronic disease management, where clients can visit our facilities for testing and receive targeted conditioning treatments for their physical conditions. This primarily focuses on lifestyle-modification-based interventions for gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic disorders, and endocrine disorders. The third is outpatient care for common illnesses, such as diagnosis and treatment of colds, fever, and other everyday ailments.
In the realm of general practice prevention and chronic disease management, while foreign markets benefit from well-established payment systems, the domestic market in China still holds significant room for exploration in terms of business models. Weiyuan Clinic is filling a gap in the Chinese market by entering the fields of general practice prevention and chronic disease management, where it has undertaken numerous attempts and innovations. First, its medical model incorporates the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), emphasizing a holistic philosophical perspective and integrating TCM clinical practices. Second, it includes components of functional medicine, nutrition, and evidence-based medicine. Third, it strengthens the application of biotechnology.
Huang Guoyue stated, “While many institutions now claim to pursue integrated healthcare, their practical implementation remains relatively rudimentary, limited to a mechanical combination of conventional approaches. Our innovation aims to extract the core elements of innovative research, maintain focus on advanced clinical technologies both domestically and internationally, and translate these into tangible improvements in clinical intervention strategies.”
The second innovation lies in the payment structure of its business model. She established a service-oriented model, initially targeting mid-to-high-end clients who possess strong health maintenance awareness and are willing to spend RMB 30,000–50,000 annually on their well-being. Weiyuan provides these clients with a comprehensive suite of services that goes beyond mere consultations or physical examinations. It encompasses continuous tracking of all health issues, early disease screening and intervention, as well as the treatment, monitoring, and efficacy evaluation of existing conditions. This addresses a gap currently present in Grade 3A hospitals.
To achieve continuous tracking of health data, Weiyuan also provides health management services through smart hardware. Weiyuan offers contextualized data monitoring rather than recording isolated data points, enabling interactive analysis of the data generated by smart devices. By introducing internationally validated assessment scales, a comprehensive data system has been established. The clinics require not only monitored physiological data but also user-reported symptomatic perceptions and peripheral lifestyle data. Integrating these diverse health data sources facilitates remote health monitoring and enhances the quality of clinical diagnostic data.
Discussing Weiyuan Medical’s future plans, Huang Guoyue stated that the company strives to establish five to six branded clinics in Shanghai, Chengdu, and other cities within three years. It is committed to providing high-quality, safe health management services to the public and continuously expanding its brand influence.
