On June 9, the opening ceremony of the “College of Diabetes Microvascular Disease (CDMVD),” jointly established by the Professional Committee on Diabetes and Microcirculation of the Chinese Society of Microcirculation and DXY, was held in Yinchuan.
Professor Sun Zilin, Chairman of the Diabetes and Microcirculation Committee of the Chinese Society of Microcirculation, stated in his address that he hopes the establishment of an online training program for diabetic microvascular disease will standardize and enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of healthcare professionals at all levels, thereby achieving complication-centered stratified management of diabetes. Nearly one hundred attending physicians became the inaugural cohort of the online course and received complimentary access cards.
At the opening ceremony, Professor Xie Xiaomin, Chair of the Ningxia Diabetes Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Director of the Department of Endocrinology at Yinchuan First People’s Hospital, stated in her address that Yinchuan is a pioneer and practitioner of “Internet + Healthcare.” She emphasized that primary healthcare workers in the region urgently need to leverage internet-based media tools to access online courses and stay abreast of the latest therapeutic advances, thereby enhancing their clinical diagnostic and treatment skills. Therefore, holding the inauguration of the College of Diabetes Microvascular Disease (CDMVD) in Yinchuan carries profound significance. Professor Liu Lin, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Shanghai Renji Hospital and a National Committee Member of the Ophthalmologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, also expressed high expectations for the College, hoping it will help primary care physicians improve their diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Experts point out that contemporary diabetes management should not be limited to achieving ideal glycemic control; rather, its goals must be expanded to prevent chronic complications through optimal metabolic control, thereby improving patients’ quality of life and extending their lifespan. Among the various chronic complications of diabetes, microvascular complications affecting the retina, kidneys, and peripheral nerves are specific manifestations across all types of diabetes. These complications severely impair patients’ quality of life and constitute major causes of mortality and disability among individuals with diabetes.
Therefore, in February this year, the Diabetes and Microcirculation Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Microcirculation released the Expert Consensus on Screening, Prevention, and Treatment of Diabetic Microvascular Disease in Primary Care Settings in China, and initiated preparations for the “Online Academy for Diabetic Microvascular Diseases.” This initiative aims to enable frontline healthcare professionals in endocrinology, general practice, and related specialties to systematically acquire standardized and practical knowledge, while also facilitating real-time interaction with academy physicians, participation in case discussions, and on-site Q&A sessions anytime and anywhere.

At the opening ceremony of the college, Professor Sun Zilin provided a detailed explanation of the original intentions behind its establishment and the distinctive features of its curriculum. Professor Sun stated that the prevalence of diabetic complications in China increases with the duration of the disease. Microvascular complications, in particular, often fail to receive early diagnosis and treatment, leading to severe clinical outcomes and imposing a substantial economic burden on society. Therefore, preventing and controlling the onset and progression of diabetic complications is the fundamental goal of diabetes management. Establishing an accessible and sustainable platform for continuing medical education aims to standardize and enhance the diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities of healthcare professionals at all levels, thereby achieving tiered diabetes management centered on diabetic complications.
Since March this year, after three months of preparation, the expert teaching team led by Professor Sun Zilin organized three collective lesson planning sessions. Following multiple rounds of filming, editing, revision, and confirmation, the first batch of video courses for 2018 under the “Online Academy for Diabetic Microvascular Disease” was finally launched, ensuring the clinical professionalism and rigor of the instructional materials.
The Chinese Diabetes Microvascular Disease (CDMVD) Online Academy will adopt a progressive, cohort-based training model. Each course series will have clearly defined learning objectives and integrate teaching, learning, and assessment functionalities. Beyond the core curriculum, the program will offer phased tutoring, Q&A sessions, interactive discussions, and online evaluations. High-performing students will be eligible for incentives such as academy scholarships, opportunities to apply for instructor positions, and participation in online case rounds at tertiary hospitals. The first batch of course series in 2018, launching on June 9, will primarily provide chapter-by-chapter explanations of key concepts from the “Expert Consensus on Screening, Prevention, and Treatment of Diabetic Microvascular Complications in Primary Care in China,” supplemented by guidance on clinical procedures.
