VCBeat (WeChat ID: vcbeat) has learned that on June 21, 2018, Peking University Health Science Center and Meinian Onehealth Healthcare Holdings Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Meinian Health”) jointly announced at the “First Health Intelligence Valley Summit Forum” held in Shenzhen that they had established the “Peking University Health Science Center Meinian Public Health Research Institute.” The initiative aims to leverage data sharing and research outcomes to jointly build a world-class platform for public health and big data research and practice.

VCBeat has learned that the Beida Medical Aesthetics Annual Public Health Research Institute will have four functional orientations: jointly undertaking national health research projects, conducting big data mining and analysis in the health sector, publishing the Health Blue Book, and providing technical guidance and support for the standardization of physical examination standards. Both parties plan to establish an Ethics Committee and an Expert Committee, which will be responsible for evaluating national health research projects and reviewing applications for biological specimens and physical examination data.

In addition, Peking University Health Science Center and Meinian Onehealth will establish a new model of medical collaboration, engaging in practical cooperation and exchanges in four key areas: public health and preventive medicine, health management and disease management, translational medicine and industrial development, and evidence-based medicine and evidence-based decision-making.

Peking University Health Science Center is one of China’s most important bases for innovative medical research and for training advanced professionals in medicine and health. It was among the first universities included in the national “Project 211” and “Project 985.” Its disciplines cover six major fields: basic medicine, clinical medicine, preventive medicine, stomatology, pharmacy, and nursing, integrating education, scientific research, and medical care.

As the world’s largest personal health big data platform and preventive medicine platform, Meinian Onehealth is also one of China’s most valuable medical service companies by market capitalization. It operates more than 400 medical and check-up centers in over 200 core cities across China. In 2017, the company provided professional health services to more than 20 million people, and it is projected to serve over 100 million individuals by 2021.

At the signing ceremony, Zhan Qimin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Executive Vice President of Peking University, and Director of the Peking University Health Science Center, pointed out that “healthcare big data is a crucial foundational strategic resource for the nation and has become a focal point for industry development. Biobanks serve as a vital supporting platform; whoever possesses biobank resources holds the initiative in medical science and technology and secures the competitive high ground in medicine.”

In his view, precision medicine should permeate the entire disease continuum in the future, encompassing disease risk prediction, diagnosis and classification, medication management, therapeutic efficacy assessment, and prognosis prediction. Precision medicine requires cutting-edge interdisciplinary integration, with rapid breakthroughs needed in technological innovations across diagnosis, treatment, and big data analytics. Integrative medicine and translational medicine represent models and mechanisms of medical development, whereas precision medicine constitutes the goal and requirement of such development. It is a core component and objective of translational medicine research, as well as a new historical imperative for evidence-based medicine. The primary arenas for advancing precision medicine are communities and hospitals, which require support from large-scale samples and big data, as well as collaborative efforts among government, industry, academia, research institutions, and end users.

Professor Li Liming, Professor at the School of Public Health, Peking University; Honorary Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom; and Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, stated that the rapid development of genomics technologies, advances in biomedical analysis techniques, and the emergence of big data analytics tools have ushered in the era of precision medicine.

As a critical component of health management, precision prevention pertains not only to disease diagnosis and classified treatment strategies but also to risk assessment and preventive measures, thereby benefiting a broader population by delaying and reducing disease incidence. The development of precision prevention represents the refinement of health management. Only by integrating health management with disease management can we achieve healthcare services across the entire life cycle. With communities as the focal point for integration, we can ultimately realize the grand vision of Healthy China.

“Meinian Onehealth is a leader in China’s health management industry, boasting large scale, extensive coverage, and strong capabilities. It is the largest big data platform for personal health checkups in China. In the future, we will collaborate on six key areas: theoretical and practical research on health management and disease management; research on health determinants and predictive early-warning systems for chronic diseases; systematic epidemiological research and precision prevention research; technical research on data science and big data mining based on population-level health checkup and follow-up data; evidence-based health policy decision-making and translational medicine research; and training of health human resources and policy development research. These six areas are developed around strategic technological reserves in precision medicine, big data, and artificial intelligence,” pointed out Li Liming.

Yu Rong, Chairman of Meinian Onehealth, pointed out that the collaboration between Meinian Onehealth and Peking University Health Science Center has ushered in a new chapter in the research and development of public health big data within China’s healthcare industry. By joining forces, the two parties will engage in in-depth exchanges and cooperation in the fields of professional medical science, public health, and social practice.

Yu Rong further pointed out that no other era has endowed the healthcare industry with such significant development opportunities. “Our current ecosystem is highly conducive to driving industry innovation and technological breakthroughs, as we possess several key elements: first, application scenarios; second, user traffic; third, technology; and fourth, talent.”

“As the world’s largest traffic gateway for personal health and preventive medicine, Meinian Onehealth possesses inherent advantages in terms of user traffic and application scenarios. In terms of technology and talent, with the support of national ministries and commissions, and leveraging Shenzhen’s vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem—particularly Yantian District, a hub with a strong foundation and genetic heritage in life and health—Meinian has achieved a rare integration of traffic, data, scenarios, and talent through the resource advantages and systematic allocation capabilities of Health Intelligence Valley. This strategic synergy is poised to yield substantial fruits, driving epic-level innovations in key areas.”

For years, Meinian Onehealth has been committed to providing professional, high-quality health examination services. Adhering to the business logic of “professional health examinations – precise data – high-risk screening – risk assessment – health management,” Meinian Onehealth is leveraging its advantages in “traffic + technology + ecosystem” to build China’s most promising big health industry cluster, striving to become a data-driven life science and health service company with unlimited potential.
